Cedar garage door restoration

Your greyed and weathered cedar garage door can be brought back to life with our specialist restoration process.

How can we help?

A cedar garage door is a real statement piece- strong, stylish, and full of character. But over time, the Kiwi climate can take its toll. The harsh sun and UV rays break down factory finishes, leaving the timber exposed to moisture, mould, and fading. Before long, that once beautiful door can end up looking dull, discoloured, and weathered.

That’s where Deck&FencePro comes in. We specialise in professional cedar garage door restoration, bringing tired, worn-out doors back to life. Whether your door is looking a little rough around the edges or needs a complete refresh, our expert team can restore its natural beauty and protect it for years to come.

Peeling varnish

We often see cedar garage doors with a varnish coating out of the factory. The New Zealand sun destroys this coating leaving the varnish flaking from the surface.

Weathered timber

Cedar is naturally a rich brown or red timber. Over time the sun’s UV kills the surface fibres resulting in a drab grey colour.

Just old and tired

All timber just gets old and tired with time. Faded previous coatings and black mould due to weathering will make your cedar door look like it needs replacement. It doesn’t.

Our restoration process

Deck&FencePro has perfected a process for restoring old weathered cedar garage doors. A combination of processes will make your door look as good as the day it was installed.

Removal of old coatings

Our specialist wood restore solution removes most stains, oils, mould and weathered fibres from the door without the need for high pressure washing (which can easily damage the soft cedar). In some cases specialist coating remover must be used to remove solvent based varnishes.

Brightening and sanding

Our timber brightening solution then removes any excess tannins from the timber to even the colour.
A light sand ensures the each board is flat and uniform but must be done carefully so as to not damage the very soft cedar. This step is especially important as older cedar becomes uneven in texture.

Refinishing

Once the door is completely dry and smooth we apply two coats of penetrating linseed oil based stain. This product does not form a surface coating and therefore will not peel as varnish does.
A recoat every could of years will ensure your door keeps its colour and protection from the elements.

    FAQ

    • Why has my cedar garage door gone black?

Cedar is a very soft and porous timber and is susceptible to mould and mildew. We usually see the lower half of the door turn darker in colour due to exposure to the elements. Our restoration process strips away the damaged layer so that the timber is even over the entire door, and our linseed oil stain protects the timber from future damage. An annual recoat of stain will keep the door as new for ever.

    • How do I maintain my restored deck, fence, door, or furniture?

A wood stain generally requires a top-up coat every 12-18 months to replenish the nourishing oils and UV blockers. We can arrange an ongoing maintenance schedule with you following the restoration process that will include a light clean followed by a recoat of the wood stain.

In between scheduled maintenance, a mild detergent is all that is needed to remove any bird droppings or spills, and a spray with a moss and lichen inhibitor during winter can also help. It is important not to use harsh deck cleaning agents that may remove the oils contained in the stain. Painted surfaces generally last longer than stained ones but are more susceptible to abrasion.
